About the Book

Twenty-Five Years of Secrets

Seaweeds of the Sunshine Coast is a science-forward field guide to the marine macroalgae of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast — one of the most biologically rich intertidal coastlines in the Pacific Northwest. Everything in it comes from 25 years of working directly with these species on this coast.

It's built on years of hands-on fieldwork here in Roberts Creek. Rigorous scientific identification, real ecological knowledge, and the practical perspective of someone who actually works with, ferments, and studies these organisms. Not a textbook. Not a pamphlet.

Organized by region — from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound — each chapter profiles the key species, ecological communities, tidal zones, and traditional uses of seaweeds in that area. It also covers seaweed ecology, responsible use, fermentation science, and modern DNA-based identification techniques.

About the Author
Gerald — Just Gerald Seaweed Company

I Wrote It. I Live Here.

I'm Gerald. I live in Roberts Creek, BC, and I've spent years on this coastline — identifying species, studying tidal communities, and learning the rhythms of this shore. The knowledge in this book came from low tides at dawn, from fermentation vessels, and from paying close attention to organisms that most people walk right past.

The same Saccharina kelp profiled in this book is the basis of my fermented preparations — a direct application of the science described in Chapter 10. The book and the products come from the same place: years of being out on this shore, taking it seriously.
